Ram Upgrade?

I run a Dell Dimension 8200, Pentium 4 1.8 Ghz CPU, 128MB RDRAM, FSB 100.

Apparently my current motherboard only supports Rambus RAM. The best price I could find on this was about $200 for a 512 megabyte stick on Newegg.com. I guess this type of RAM must be installed in pairs, so I'm looking at $400 to upgrade to 1 Gig RAM.

I'm looking for better general performance for Video Editing and DVD Creation and am tired of the computer lagging while multi-tasking. I don't use the system for gaming. Would it be better value to upgrade the entire motherboard that supports a newer and cheaper type of RAM? My knowledge of hardware installation is very limited, so I'm worried about jacking with my system too much. With a new motherboard, would I have to purchase a new graphics card, cpu, and RAM?

with 400 dollars you can get a new CPU with a new mobo with new type ram for possible less. but then theres a little more work then just adding RAM.
 
Yeah, $400 seems like a waste to just spend on RAM imo...

But then you have to decide whether or not you fancy taking apart and installing more than just memory sticks. I can honestly tell you now that building a PC is not hard! Besides, you can always ask us for help if you need it ;)
 
Get a new motherboard, you can get the botherbored for less then 100$ and 1GB of ram, for less then 100$, unless you want the highest quility, then it will be nearing 350ish, which you will still have faster ram then that rambus, and then your will have better mobo..

and weather you will haev to upgrade your graphics card and all that that depens on what you havenow, and what you get.
 
Yes he can get all that for less...BUT, then he'd need a new powersupply and a new case because dell uses wierd powersupplies and cases. In order to properly cool a new case you'd need to buy fans and stuff. And if you want a floppydisc then you'd need that too cause Dell uses OEM one's that won't fit. So therefore you'd be completely rebuilding your computer.
