Hey everyone i just bought 1g of ram for my DELL 4600. how do i install it so i dont mess it up and my compture thanks for your help

It's reeeeaaaaal easy, probably the easyest part to change as there are no screws, no wires, no nothing.

I'll tell you how to do it in steps:

1. Remover the side panel from your case.

2. Locate the RAM, refer to the RAM that you have bought for what it will look like, size, shape etc. It is basically a long, thin rectangular component, real easy to see.

3. Touch the bottom of your case where it is not painted for a few seconds. This will remove all charge that you have to prevent any static on your body from damaging components.

4. By the RAM you will see at either end of the RAM that is already in 2 little latches. Push these latches away so that the RAM is no longer secured in place. Removing both latches may cause the RAM to pop out, if not, once the 2 little latches are fully off the RAM, gently pull the RAM module out. NEVER WIGGLE IT

5. Repeat step 3

6. Working out which side has the longer and which has the shorter side between the divide on the RAM slots place the new RAM in the socket that the old RAM has just come from. If the RAM will not fit, try swapping it around, see if you misinterpritted the longer and shorter sides.

5. When pushed in the RAM module should cause the 2 latches to snap into place. When both of the RAM modules are secured correctly in place, replace the side panel, reconnect the system and boot up. It should now work fine and quicker than before.

thanks do i have to take old ram out or can i leave it in. i done look at the mother board it has 2 more slots for ram in the middel of the ram thats in it now

there may be problems with leaveing it in:

1. if you only have 2 RAM slots, obviously you can't have 4 sticks in so you can't leave them in.

2. The RAM you have bought and the other may not be matched. Even if both are the same frequency, latency, everything, they may not work. If you get 4 sticks of the same brand then they will, but still not neccesarily. My 8 gig of RAM for example i got from 2 packs, 2 of the same pack, so when i got it i got 2 packs of 2x2 GB on offer, so £140ish for £70 . Before that i had 2GB of RAM. The stuff i had when i very first got it was corrupt, so Corsair said send it in, we'll have a look. While i was having all of this I bought a cheap 2GB kit for about £20. When Corsair sent me out a new set, even though timings and everything were the same, it wouldn't boot with all 4. It wasn't the bios, that was the latest one so couldn't flash it to a newer one, both were in fine, there wasn't any dust on the connections, all the power settings were right, they just weren't matched so wouldn't work. Some will work together even though they aren't the same make from the same brand, but in general, 99 times out of 100, Different brands and makes of RAM won't work together

response to 1: he said there are two MORE slots

response to 2: 99 outta 100 wont work? I can't believe that, sorry. On my parents computer, it worked, flawlessly. Same with my computer. Both times, we left the old stuff in, so it can't be that is 99 out of 100. Oh, AND my older brothers old computer was the same, as is my youngers computer, so we've done it 4 times with out an issue. And there were probably more with all the assorted computers we've had.

If for some weird reason they DON'T work together, just take out the old stuff. Also, if you are doing this dual channel, check your mobo manual for instructions on how to put the ran in, because if you don't put it in in the right order, IT MAY NOT WORK!

hope it works

RAM is the easiest thing to install find the current ram and if there is a slot open next to it put it in if not take out the smallest stick and insert the new one

hey all. i just got my ram in the mail and so far it is working. i left my old in and it is working good i will keep you posted on it
