Random Blue Screen

I just got a computer from a friend, they say there is something wrong with the video card. The computer will turn on and XP loads and it will run for random amounts of time and then the blue screen comes up saying Windows shut down to prevent serious damage and gives me different codes and different reasons why it shut down each time. Once it was shell32.dll, another time it was win32k.sys, always different. Its an AMD Duron 1.2GHz 120MB RAM. When I go into the hardware devices the Media, and Video Card say they arent working properly. I tried to uninstall and reinstall the drivers but no luck. Its an onboard video card, Trident 3D ProMedia. My question:
Is it the video card?
If I install a new one should that fix the problem?

ack okay I take it back, I reformatted the harddrive and now there is no problem with any of the media in the Device Manager. But the other problem I have (have had from the start) is in the "Other Devices" catagory. It says the PCI Simple Communications Controller isn't working. It SAYS the drivers arent installed but I am afraid to try installing them for fear of messing the other stuff up.

well onboard video is not in the form of a card so therefore you cannot just instal another one but however you can dissable the onboard and instal a videocard that is either agp or pci depending on what your mobo has for slots. Have you tried to reinstal or update the chipset drivers?.
 
The only thing in the Device Manager that says is wrong is the PCI Communications Controller, and I uninstalled and reinstalled it and its a Motorola SM56 Speakerphone Modem. When I try and reinstall it won't finish because it needs "sm56co.dll" and asks me to insert the CD or direct it to the location the file can be found. Ive searched on driverguide and I cant find that file, and I keep getting the stupid blue screen and it shuts everything off. I think I will go post this in the other part of the forums since I dont think this has to do with the video card anymore?
 
Okay so it did it again and after i restarted windows this is what they brought up on the screen....

SYMPTOMS
You may receive one of the following Stop error messages:
STOP 0x000000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER
STOP: 0x100000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER_M

CAUSE
This issue may occur if the display driver is caught in an infinite loop while it waits for the video hardware to become idle. This issue typically indicates a problem with the video hardware or that the display driver cannot program the hardware correctly.

WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Display.
2. On the Settings tab, click Advanced, and then click the Troubleshoot tab.
3. Move the Hardware Acceleration slider to None, and then clear the Enable Write Combining check box.
4. Click OK, and then click OK.

Note This procedure prevents the display driver from programming the hardware incorrectly, but you may lose some display functionality and performance. Although you can increase the hardware acceleration settings higher than None to regain functionality and performance, these settings increase the chance that the issue will occur again. For maximum stability, leave hardware acceleration off.

MORE INFORMATION
This Stop error message may also occur in video adapter drivers that do not represent a physical device. For example, this Stop error message may occur in the virtual video adapter driver that is used by Symantec PCAnywhere. If PCAnywhere is installed on a computer where this error message occurs, visit the Symantec Web site to determine if there are any available fixes for your version of PCAnywhere.

I did the WORKAROUND and its still shutting down.
 
Turning hardware acceleration off is just a generic workaround for a lot of problems, try updating your driver and check the manufacturer for a fix or patch.
