random clicking sounds

So I've had this desktop for about 5 years now and it's treated me well. But lately it's been emmiting this clicking sound followed by a whirring, similar to when I switch it on. It goes through bouts of this every few minutes and sometimes almost constantly. I wonder what the problem is, and if it's serious.

A clicking sound being heard on an old system generally points only at one thing. Your hard drive is on the way out! The clicking is heard when the drive's platter either is slowing or somthing is constricting the air flow to fully raise and keep the read-write head off of the platter(metal magnetic disk) inside.

When your system is off and the drive is at a stand still the head at the end of an arm rests lightly on the surface of the platter. Apparently it is starting to bounce up and down strikiing the platter and heading for a total hard drive "crash"!

Hope it's not the click of death from an extra HDD?
Can you figure out where the clicking is coming from? Have you opened up the case and had a look inside?

Yea, the external shouldn't be a problem. Like PC Eye said,

My laptop HDD did the same thing before it crashed.

If the drive is really hot when touched that shows a major problem right off. A freeware known as SpeedFan can usually show temps for internal drives as well as the cpu and board. You can download for the time being from http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php But plan on replacing the drive or simply upgrading to a new build soon enough.

The same thing happened to me right before my HD died. The next time I restarted the computer...it never came back on. So. I'd recommend backing up any data you have on there and shopping around for a new hard drive.
