Random Lockups?

Alright, I got an Acer Aspire 9400 for college.

I've used it regularly but I've noticed that at random times, the system locks up, for a brief period, say like 10 seconds, and then unlocks and perceeds as normal

It's getting increasingly frustrating when I am listening to music, and it locks up unvailing a long screech for the 10 seconds

I don't know what it is from. I don't remember if it did it when I had Norton on the computer, but now that I put the McCafee version my university has given me it happens.

How about a Welcome to the Computer Forum first! http://www.computerforum.com/70672-official-welcome-thread.html and a brief reminder for new members to review the http://www.computerforum.com/52038-forum-rules.html

You apparently went from worse to worst when selecting an antivirus program there. Norton loves to trump on resources while McAfee is total foobar! If you are looking for a good retail product Trend Micro's softwares are top rated. For a free program that won't cause havoc like you are seeing there apparently go for Grisoft's free version of their AVG sotfware. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/

McAfee was tried out and dumped here some years back on a 95 machine. The locks and screaching sound may have more to do with a need to update the sound drivers for the portable there. You would have to go to the manufacturer's support site for downloading updates there. The player being used may need to be reinstalled or replaced depending what you are using other then Windows Media Player.
