im trying to install windows xp onto my computer with an update disk. i have refromated the drive with fdisk and when i put in the xp disk everything goes fine tell i get the the copying windows files screen where it will randomly restart at different percentages. that happend multiple times but during my last try it froze when trying to copy the file rio8drv.sys.

does anyone know whats causeing the setup to not finish?

its not over heating. the cpu runs at 30c idle.
the disk is clean and i just tried the installation again with a different cdrom drive and this time it didnt restart but the screen went black and the system speaker did a continues beap that never stoped

You might have bad memory. Run a program called memtest86 to see if you do. Or if you have more than one stick just leave in 1 and try it, if it don't work, take it out and switch it with the other one and try it again.

thanks for the advice. it got it installed with only one ram stick in and after it was done i put the other one back in and it runs fine.

I would still run that program called Memtest to check all your sticks of memory. Most likely the one you took out has errors and you will have problems in windows and if you ever have to reinstall windows again. With this being a new setup and if the memory has errors, you could return it for good memory. Thats what i would do anyway.
