Random Restart

My friend's computer restarts at randoms points in time and he doesn't know why. Does anyone know what could be the cause of this restarting trend? plz reply.

I have a P4 3.0C and it restarts randomly (or when I stress the CPU a lot) on occassion. Not sure if that's a heat issue or not because I also recall that happening during installs of programs sometimes...starting to wonder if it's my PSU... (Rosewill Value 450)

next time this happens, reboot and go into bios and check the cpu temp, when my computer used to do this, it would reboot and still be mid to upper 70's. Ended up being a heat issue.

My PC reastarted once and right away I knew why. It over heated becaused there was so much dust in the PSU and all over everything. I just used an air compressor to blow it clean (outside) and the restarting stopped.

I have a temp guage right on my case and the highest it's gotten is 84.5 Fahrenheit, which I'm pretty sure is well within operating range. I've tired oc'ing it, but the last few times I tried to get even a 5% oc it would mess up at BIOS.

it doesnt have anything to do with temp. because sometimes when the computer restarts it talks about program problems... any other ideas?

SupraSteve: i'll try and get his specs and get back to you w/ them.

do you have dual channel memory?
if so put it in the slot number 1 and 3

If that aint it, i guess maybe he was screwing around in BIOS and changed someting and saved.

Try to reset CMOS.
then go t bios and load and save factory setttings

maybe needs needs thermal paste like artic silver

I contacted Intel about my 3.2 after I burned up a motherboard, they said operating range is supposed to be no hotter than 67.7. I'll post the contents of the e-mail below:
The maximum operating temperature of the Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 processor 640 is
67.7 degrees Celsius. As long as the processor is operating under this
temperature it is operating within specifications. We recommend setting any
thermal alarms about three (3) degrees below the maximum recommended temperature
for the processor. We do not have a normal operating temperature for the
processor as this temperature will very depending on the chassis and other
hardware installed on the system as well as the actual load the software is
placing on the processor. For more information on thermal management you may
visit <http://support.intel.com/support/processors/pentium4/thermal.htm>.

I had a similar problem with my computer about six months ago. random rebooting with different messages almost everytime. Turn out that the grease on my brand new heatsink was old and not conducting heat away from the processor. I scraped it off and added new and walla! I have also been told that if the heatsink is installed backwards that it will sit @ a slight angle and not cool properly. Just my 2cents.

Interesting... I had some trouble getting my heatsink on so not only did I smear some of the pre-applied thermal paste, but I may have also put the heatsink on backwards (if that's a real possibility).

p.s. - Of course, I noticed the last time it restarted randomly that I was using the new Firefox 1.5 browser. Could that have anything to do with it?
