random shutdowns

My computer at random times shuts off and the only way to restart it again is if i turn off the power switch at the back of the computer tower for about 5 seconds and then i could restart, sometimes it will boot up, and at times it shuts down again immediately. When I turn off the power switch at the baack of the tower, i hear a fan turn off,, i'm not sure if its from the power supply or the cpu fan, i'm guessing its the power supply fan.

Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Check temps in the bios its most probably over heating.

If its to high ( say 70 C or more) get a new h/s and some arctic silver 5.

Also check if the mobo 3 pin fan connector isn't faulty, i had a system that this happened the fan would power up then slow down when windows booted, i connected it to a four pin convertor for the psu and it works fine.

the temps are fine

i have a good cpu fan, thermaltake volcano 7 and used arctic silver as well. I've had my setup for a few years now already and haven't touched the connections with the mobo. sincec i've made it, it has worked well until very recently, so i'm stuck as to what it could be. initially i thought it might have been a hard drive that was dying, i got a new HD like a year ago and this problem recently came up maybe 6 months ago

i had a same prob with a AMD Sempron 2800+ mobo + CPU, it was a case shorting... the case was touching the mobo and grounding the connections, take the mobo out, the whole thing, (CPU fan PSU HDD, and put them on anti-static bags. reconnect everything together. then start it. check PSU too like taylor

i'm not sure how the mobo could be touching the case because on the case itself, there's a place for you to screw down the mobo into the casing where the screws go , and so the mobo is elevated away from the case.
