Because it spins at 10,000RPM's, instead of the normal 7,200RPM. Meaning faster access times, faster loading times, and faster transfer or large files.

so the raptor wouldn't be that noticeable of a difference? i already have an 80gb drive.. and i've thought of getting the 36gb raptor and installing windows and games on it and leaving my 80gb for my multimedia, etc.

Well windows and apps will load faster with a raptor, but i dont think its worth the price. I'd rather go with a high capacity SATA II hard drive w/16MB Cache.

I'd say raptors are way overrated, i would spend less for a higher capacity SATA or SATA II harddrive.

Also, the raptor has a 8meg buffer, opposed to the other one which has a 16 meg. I think that probably makes up for the 2800 rpm difference. Plus its bigger in size(gb). also, if you really want a wd, you can look at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822136003

True, and i also heard that windows loading times is also much faster. but again, i dont think its worth it.

you would rather have that maxtor? ugh... in my experience maxtor is the worst brand of hd.. and how does double the cache make up for the lack of rpm? the raptor isnt THAT noticeable, but it is certainly faster than most. though sataII is a better choice i think. but a 5year warranty is nice on the raptor.. and they're quiet

If you're looking for something REALLY fast, look at this. It'd easily outperform any hard drive on the market. A little gimmiky in my opinion (I certainly wouldn't want to store anything important on it), but it certainly is fast.

I wouldn't actually recommend it though, and a larger SATA hard drive would be better value than the raptor IMO
