It has always been expensive, that's probably why it was phased out so quickly. Also you have to upgrade in pairs, so that'll be even more expensive.
 
You will probably just be better off upgrading to another system rather than buying more Rambus Random Access Memory. Be sure you get a motherboard that uses DDR2 memory as that is plentifully available and inexpensive right now.

everything starts expensive.
whats so special about RDRAM
 
It's fast but has high latencies. I think most of the price now comes from it's rarity, but when it first came out it was much faster than other RAM at the time.
