Hi everyone.

I'm currently running Xp Pro on a Pc I bought second- hand about a year ago. Over time my Xp is running poorer everyday and I believe some files are corrupted. I do not have the OS Disk so I cannot Re-Install or fix my current version. I have the Product Key for my version but thats it. Can someone suggest my best path to go down. Ideally I would like to install xp completely from fresh and activate it (either with my Key or another) Obviously Im looking for the cheapest method possible. (Q1-Can I use someone elses Xp Pro Disk?) (Q2-I have access to a XP HOMEdisk but someone has activated it, can i install it and use my Product Key?)

Thanks for your help in advance. Things are getting desperate now!

you can use someones elses disk, and install it with your product key (if the OS is the same type as yours). If not, try to find a code key on net. Than just make a copy of the disc;) so that you will have no such problems in the future

ok im just pointing out ok.

heres a quick question i wanna know, if you have a genuine copy of xp on cd and you reformat the hard drive. when you install the copy of xp will microsoft detect it as genuine.

I bought an OEM of XP Home SP1 a while back. I plan on installing it in a while. If I have any problems, I'll post 'em, but Microsoft does have its Genuine Advantage thingy it downloads/requires for some of the updates. If it runs and decides your truly genuine copy of XP is fake, then a phone call to Microsoft would be required to explain things and hash everything out.

Yes you can use someone elses CD as long as you use your own CD key. You should find it on the side of your computer. Be sure the disk you use is the same type of OS that you have. If you have XP Pro retail then use an XP Pro retail disk. If you have XP Pro OEM then use an OEM disk. The key you have will only work as long as the Disk matches the OS type currently in use. It does not matter that someone else has used the disk to activate their machine. Activation is a product of the hardware that XP is installed on and has nothing to do with the actual CD. When you find the right disk, make yourself a copy so that you do not have these problems in the future.
