Re install windows

Hi We were given a Dell desk top today which we intend to use in place of our current HP as its a lot newer, the HP being about 8 years old. I would like to wipe off all the stuff on it and put it back so factory settings but i cant find a recovery section on the hard drive and the guy we got it from hasnt got any recovery discs for it. When we got the HP, aswell as having a built in recovery on it, we made a back up of the original system on dvd. What i was wondering is if we run this disc will it restore windows (XP) on the Dell or will that not work.

It will not work unless both machines have the exact same hardware. The factory disk that comes with them are fully loaded with the OS, the drivers, and the useless bloatware. The second one is what is going to screw you up.

Though if you have a key, it is entirely possible to get an install disk for XP.
