Who is the computer manufacturer. Is it a Dell, HP, Compaq?

Most of the name brand manufactures listed above give you
the option to reinstall XP from a recovery partition on the
original drive. Unfortunately, most of the time it wipes out
whatever is already on the drive.

If the computer was custom built then it should have come
with a recovery cd or the windows XP cd.

If it has a recovery partition it will usually display a key
(like F10) to start recovery when you first turn on the
computer.

Some computers also give you the ability to create recovery
cd's. Most HP's and Compaq's do this. If you have this option
you need to created the CD's with a cd burner before you do
anything else to the computer.

i have a dell, so, if re-install it i will lose everything? my problem is that i have an external dvd burner, it was working fine. then one day it decided to become an unknown device. i may have deleted something without realising, ive tried everything to get it to work again, uninstalling it from device manager and so on, but ive been told that the easiest way is to re-install xp. is this true? or can the drivers for everything be reset to default settings? i think it is a driver issue. i had an mp3 player whaich came with a driver cd and installed that, but when i plugged it in, it was unknown also.

If you have an external dvd burner and a mp3 player and they both
don't work. It is probably a software problem of some type.
Reinstalling XP would probably help if you completely wiped out
the computer and reinstalled. If you installed over the current
XP you might still have the same problem.

You first need to determine what options you have available
to you.

Do you have the option to make the recovery cds (even if
the cd/dvd burner doesn't work)?

You might also contact Dell and request the CDs. Some
companies with provide them free (if you are stern about
asking) and some will provide them at a cost.

You might also try using the System Restore options in
windows XP and restoring the computer to an earlier
date. This might fix your problems.
