hi...
If i want to format my hard drive and re-install windows, will it tell me that this copy of windows is already activated and not allow me to use it?
I need to format but i dont want to losy my copy of windows...

Any copy of Windows can only be activated with Microsoft a certain number of times (3 I believe off the top of my head), after that it'll say it's been registered too many times. It happens to me all the time. But it's not the end of the world, just when it fails, call the toll-free number to register over the phone, go through the motions until it fails again and puts you through to a customer service agent. Just explain to him/her the fact that it's only ever been installed on one machine and whether you obtained your software with the PC or OEM, and she'll issue you a new key for you to key in manually.

It happens to me every time I install a new motherboard.

Yea like magicman said, if the copy is legite and if something comes up.. just give Microsoft a call. And all this is assuming you have the full XP disk and the serial number for it.

When you say copy of windows, I hope you mean the ability to reinstall it on your machine over and over, rather than all the stuff like programs, etc. on your previous Windows that you are about to format. Just to make sure we are on the same page.

yeh i knew i would have to re-install all the programs etc...
well it let me activate it again, so everythings fine!
cheers,
Paul

It really helps to have a restore disk. I reinstalled my Laptop 3 weeks ago having drivers really helps. (try using 1024x768 on a 1280x768 screen)

Assuming you have a legit copy of XP and arent making any Hardware changes you can also legally do this.
That falls within the criteria of a crack, trying to find a workaround for a built-in security feature of Windows. QACJared and Omega, please remove the links from your posts.

Edit: Thank you QACJared.

have you tried restroing it to the eirliest time possible, previbally right to the beggining of the restore timetable

just a side question on
Assuming you have a legit copy of XP and arent making any Hardware changes you can also legally do this
