Reactivate xp on upgraded system

Im currently upgrading a 2006 xp system and ive ended up replacing everything except the DVD drive (was going to keep the Hard Drive but i have no IDE on new motherboard) will i be able to use the xp licence i had before?
i was told if you call and say you have upgraded the system the licence was used on its fine as they are just trying to stop it being used on multiple computers but will such an overhaul of components count it as a new computer?

I tell them that I upgraded a few components and it's asking to re-activate, they have always giving me an activation code.

Myself also. Always gave another key and no problem.
OEM may be a problem. Mine have always been a build and retail operating system.
OEM may require same components. and likely.

thanks
its a system built by a family friend so i assume its a retail copy

im planning on buying a windows 7 upgrade once ive activated xp, does that activate based on your xp activation?

yes, requires xp installation for upgrade.
Retail does not. you can wipe and install 7 retail and done.

Having an XP license means you're legally eligible to use upgrade media to upgrade to Win 7 but you can't do an in-place upgrade of XP to Win 7 so, as User0one said, there is no point to installing XP first. You need to do a custom install, also referred to as clean install.

Ok.... please clarify. How do ya use the upgrade?
Im confused now. Or and i forgot. Guessing your saying it will ask for the disk
for installation. Would that be correct?

Ya just answered my question. thanks
same time i did.

Sorry, still confused and have a question. Doesn't the XP have to exist first for the custom upgrade of windows 7 or will it ask for the XP disc? What if ya wiped XP with a low level format? Where would ya be at during the installation and upgrade.
