sounds like you have a lot of things going on, first .dll files are usually system files and if they're gone you probably have to reinstall windows. Seeing you have so many programs and you don't know what all they do, you might want to reinstall windows and reinstall programs as you need them, cause if you don't need someting you'll never reinstall it. The cd-rom drive is a problem, either find the drivers you need for it and reinstall them or get a new one, because you either lost drivers or your cd drive is broken.

I agree. It's a really old and unsupported operating system. Since you're working with Windows 98 still, I would definitely just format and reinstall the OS. You can try booting off a thumbdrive or download the Win98 CD files to it and onto your HD. If you do that, you wont be able to format and only install on top of it.

The computer is a Dell insiron5000 ,The CD disk drive isnt functional when I try to use it it says cant see CD drive ,not connected? eveything else buttons and floppy works well. The system has windows 98 SE installed , I have to wait for it to boot up with the icons showing on the desk top, this is the only way I can add or change things ,most of the time an error pops up It says[I explorer caused an invalid page fault in module Kernel32.dll ,sometimes a dialog box pops up and says there are other 16 bit programs running cannot open ] I tried scan reg restore and fix I have a windows 98 SE start up disk but dont know how to use it when it asks for promps? If I couod get rid of the 16 bit programs running and the page fault Kernel 32 dll problems I would be back in working order again Thats why I was toying with the Idea of copying a 98SE disk to a zip disk on my good PC then to a compressed floppy if its possible ?

You can transfer the files to your laptop all sorts of ways. If it's an external Zip drive, it would be faster to transfer that way. It's going to be about 125mb if I remember correctly. You just have to copy the Win98 folder on the CD, the rest is additional stuff that you wont need. There's also 2 other folders in the Win98 folder that you wont need either, I think they're tours of the OS. Just copy the files in the Win98 and you'll be fine. The setup file is in there too.

Yes, the Win98 folder is only 120-130 mb. You can transfer it to your C: and run the install. It should install on top of it. Since you can't format it or else you'll loose your Win98 install folder.

OK where do I start first where do I find the wind 98 folder if its in my good PC its windows 98 is that ok to use when the laptop is windows 98 second edition? or do I down load it from a windows site as windows 98 second edition do a step by step for me I just got the thumb drive

No, the Win98 folder is in the Windows 98 CD. Copy the Win98 folder into the thumb drive. Take that thumb drive to your laptop, copy to your computer, then launch the Setup file in that folder.
