Ready to try Linux

I have a spare PC that I want to tinker with and I think I'm going to put a Linux OS on it just to try it out. I'm looking at Ubuntu to start. Any suggestions or ideas for me?

This on a third PC I have and since I've never dealt with Linux, I thought I'd give one a try. Thanks.

Ubuntu is a pretty popular place to start.

What are the system specs of the computer?

PCLinuxOS, Fedora 9, Or Ubuntu Ultimate about 1.9gb, I'd choose between Ubuntu Ultimate and PCLinuxOS.

The specs on the PC I want to install Ubuntu as follows:
Dell Optiplex GX240
P4 @ 2.0 GHz
1GB Ram

Think it'll do okay?

Yes, it will do. I ran a Laptop with 215MB ram and 1.0Ghz Processor, with Ubuntu.

That should run ubuntu with no problem.

i am tinkering about with linux as well but im sticking to a live version for the moment.

I don't guess there's a free Mac OS available is there? Sorry, all I know is M$.
