Really cheap thermal paste from eBay (Gold colored)

Probably be fine. There's really only a few degrees difference between the good stuff and the other stuff. But I would just spend the few bucks and buy some on Newegg or where ever. Delivery from China could take a month. It's how long I waited ordering stuff from there on ebay.

That's "thermal grease" and would probably perform horribly. There's no name brand.

Get "Arctic Silver 5" but anything by Cooler Master or a similar brand would work better than that.

Arctic Silver is so cheap I'm not sure why anyone would use a 'cheap alternative'?
I can't find AS5 at my local PC stores in Romania and can only get it online. Would be silly to wait for it to be shipped just to get a 2c decrease. I only use AS5 because I ordered it with my keyboard.

Its not just a matter of a 2c decrease or whatnot, its using a trusted, quality product to protect your expensive components.

I'd rather wait for top quality, then use a product of unknown origin/quality

That's quite ironic because AS5 is conductive because it contains silver so if you accidentally spill it on your motherboard and don't notice it, you might kill your board.

How would you spill it on motherboard??

A pea sized dot on cpu isnt gonna spill..not sure what your getting at or what process you use.

originally bought it to repaste a 7 y/o laptop. but never got around to doing it. now i need it to replace mobo from really cheap desktop. anyways, this thing should work and not liquify and spill out of the heat sink over time right?

Thermal paste doesn't "liquify and spill"

another thing to consider here is how fast this cheap compound breaks down and hardens and loses its heat transfer abilities.if im going to apply new paste to my heatsink i dont think so much about 2 or 3 degrees difference in temps, but rather how long this will keep my temps stable.

typing this on a 7 y/o machine. never once changed the thermal paste. the one from oem must be crusty/flaky by now. machine used to overheat and power down. Went into the BIOS and told CPU to use lowest multiple, which is half of its regular clock speed. Never experienced overheating again. I wouldn't worry about longevity of thermal paste. Usually guys that do repaste them do it every year thereafter...

I don't know who does thermal paste every year.. I'll do it when I start to notice temps climbing but that about it.

That sounds horrible/lazy when repasting only takes a couple minutes..

LOL, neuter your PC because you cannot be bothered to change TIM? Not good advice.

Annually I flush my WC loop, replace TIM on all components (GPU, CPU and other heatsinks). Remove dust, reinstall Windows, etc. Makes a big difference. Shouldve seen the gunk that comes out of the WC loop eek :)

This is a laptop we're talking about. They made it difficult to access its innards which is why I've never bothered to replace the TIM. If it ain't broke, why fix it?
