Really Noisy Fan

I've got a really noisy fan on my laptop (HP Pavillion dv6000), which is getting unbearable. It's on all the time now and I can hardly stand to be in the same room as it. Such a shame too, as when it was knew (2 years ago) it was perfectly silent, which is one of the things i liked most.

I don't want to be dismantling the laptop, as I wouldn't know where to start and would probably end up damaging something. But I'm vaguely aware that there may be some options I could play with in Device Manager, or something like that.

If anyone can help, you'll have a friend for life!! Thanks in advance.

i have a dv6000, and even if i turn up the fans all the way, it is still quiet, your fan is going out. if you dont fix it, or have it fixed, it could go out completely, and burn up ur cpu. is it still under warranty?

ganzey, yes i realise the danger. it's not under warranty any more, i think - just outside. but there must be a simple way of calming the fan somehow. at least i hope so... this really puts me off buying laptops in future - it's the second time it's happened to me now. hope someone can help. thanks

right now its making that noise at normal speed. there are some programs, like speedfan, where you can speed up or slow down your fans. the only things is that if you slow it down to make it quiet, it will get hotter. therefore, i take no responsibility if you fry your cpu.

If your fan does burn out, you're screwed. Better to go in and replace it... cheap, and less danger than you'd think.

Yes you should replace your fan and after that I think you should buy a notebook cooler. This will help your laptop keep cool and not overheat. I think that that should keep your fan clean from dust and other particles that are present in the air. And finally keep checking that the surface you put your laptop on is clean from dust and other stuff.

I would have to agree with everyone else. You should just go to best buy or compusa and let them check out the problem for you, if you do not want to fix it yourself.

thanks, guys. i appreciate all those comments. i'll experiment with all the options and hopefully will extend the life of my laptop. thank you ever so much. all the best
