really strange 6800 problem

Hi,

A few weeks ago my trusty old 6800 (AGP) just stopped working for no apparant reason, I was gutted, cos it cost me £200 when they first came out. I tried removing it and putting it back in several times, but it would not work, so I put another older graphics card in the PC, and it booted up no problem.

A few days ago I gave the 6800 to a freind to test for me, the bloody thing worked, so I brought the card home today, put it back in my computer, but still nothing. I then put the older graphics card in, and that worked fine. I did this several times and always got the same result.

As it happens Iv got an old AGP computer that I havent used in ages, so I brought it back from retirement to test the 6800 out. Both the graphics cards worked fine in the old computer, so I tried them both in my main PC again, the older graphics card works fine, but the 6800 just will not work in my main PC. Iv tried fitting it tons of times in both machines, always with the same results.

I shone a torch inside the AGP port to make sure there's no dirt in there, but its clean. Iv removed all but the essential components from my main PC, but the problem remains. Iv been fixing PC's for years, I cant remember the last time I needed help fixing one, but Im totally out of ideas, and my head is really starting to hurt.

Has anyone any idea what the problem might be???

Cheers.

Could be, but the 6800 requires a molex, and it screams if I forget to plug the molex in. Im beginning to think its a problem with the AGP port itself.

I cant get either of the graphics cards to work now, Im on the verge of giving up, Im guessing its a motherboard/AGP port problem. It should'nt cost that much to replace the motherboard I guess, unless anyone's got anymore ideas.

It could be that the P/S has just got so weak that it cant power it now. If you have got a spare P/S or one you could swap out I would try that first.

I changed the power supplies round, but no change, so I switched them back, plugged the 6800 in the older PC and switched it on and get a screen full of little flashing coloured boxes. Iv killed the 6800!!!

Just to make sure, I tried the PC with the older graphics card, works fine, put the 6800 back, and get the flashy boxes again, its definatly dead.

Im not sure what killed it, but I did'nt use any anti static precautions so maybe thats why it died. So thats a new motherboard, and graphics card I need, think it might be time for a new PC, lol. Thanks for the help guys.
