Reboot and select proper boot device?

Hi, Sorry another problem. With my PC this time! It is a new build and it boots and recognises the mobo as the boot screen comes up and I can get to the bios as usual. It does not seem to recognise the hdd as SATA 1, 2, 3, 4 are all marked under "not recognised" or "not found" or something like that anyway.

I have set the bios to boot from CD as I am installing Vista. It is the 64 bit edition and I am using a Asus matx board with a e6600 duo.

It keeps coming up with the "reboot and select proper boot device or insert proper media," or something along those lines. Is it not recognising the vista disk? The HDD is working as it has an old xp install.
Anyone any ideas?

Thanks guys, Nick

You may need to install some SATA drivers off a disk. Check your Motherboard Disk to see if any it came with any.

Yeah, you can go on the company website a find your model of your board. Download the latest BIOS file and put it on a floppy disk and flash BIOS using the flash BIOS feature. I would check to see if your motherboard has anyway of doing this. It should say like something under a tab, Flash or for ASUS it is EZFlash. If you don't have a floppy disk you can get one for like 5 bucks, and a disk pack for like 2.

You'll need another computer.

Do you have your board model? I find them for you.

Ok cool. Its the p5b vm i think. I have just found that when I press F8 it only comes up with the floppy drive. It does not seem to recognise the cd drive or the HDD, and there is no floppy. I have an old floppy and disks. Just checked and it has a flash utility.

Is it possible that the cd drive is knackered, as I know its not the HDD that is broken.

Are you saying that the HDD and CD drive are both Sata? Anyway here is the latest BIOS Revivsions, If you have the latest, (You can check the on the POST screen or the BIOS main screen.

Also, Check to see that the cable is completely through to the HDD and make sure you have a good enough PSU to run it. Make sure you have the correct power running to it. Also, Make sure that IDE Ribbon is completely in both the motherboard and drive.

Ah, it is a 320W psu going to 2mb of ocz ram, a dual core e6600 and a 8800? Is this so underpowered it wont work? I thought it wouls just sacrifice performance? The HDD is SATA and the optical drive isnt.
Thanks for the help by the way!

Wow, I can't believe you can even post with that PSU, This is from Ceewi1's PSU Video Card Power.

This list is a consolidation of official, manufacturer supplied power requirements for PCs by video card. It is intended as a first resource when choosing an appropriate PSU for a system or video card upgrade (or choosing a video card that will work with your current PSU).

Keep in mind that these figures are based on a typical gaming system including the specified video card. Users with multiprocessor systems, large RAID arrays, or other power sucking devices will need to use a larger PSU than is specified here.

Figures in blue are those which I have extrapolated, due to manufacturer data being unavailable. If anyone has any additions or corrections please post/PM me. I will endeavour to keep this list updated as new cards are released. Be aware that some manufacturers specify different requirements for the same card. In this case I've taken a little licence when choosing the figure to use.

Try taking the 8800GT out, and using the onboard VGA, and update that BIOS.

Just done that and same message. I checked all the connections and I still cant seem to get past the menu and into windows.
I agree that it is an underpowered psu but i dont think this is the problem in this case :(
I think it must be a bios problem.

Ok i just did something with ezflash. When i press enter it just says loading... for a milisecond then goes back to how it originally was with no notifications of any kind. Is that normal?

Ok i just tried it. It didnt really do anything but flash when i pressed enter, but when I pressed b it started to backup which took ages. The flashing loading message cant mean anything as the backup to the floppy took some time and after i rebooted it said the bios was version 901 or something in the 900's. I have 1001 or something like that on my floppy.

How do you normally go throught the flashing process?

Ok so what you do is insert the floppy and go to BIOS and go under the EZFlash tool, then follow the procedures on the Screen. Make sure you have enabled on your BIOS screen a Legacy Drive 1.44mb

Ok I have just updated it to the latest version and the optical drive spins furiously as though it is trying to boot from disk, but again comes up witht the same message. I have checked with an xp disk instead of vista and it seems to do the same thing.

Is there Something wrong with the sata and IDE part of the bios as when I press F8 there is only the floppy recognised. Is this normal, or should there be hdd and cdrom too?

I think it is just the CD-ROM, Can you please post your specs on your PC. Try to more things, Use another IDE-Ribbon, and use another CD-ROM drive, and make sure that the cables have no interferance, and are not frayed or loose.

Ok it seems to read the optical now. I cleared cmos again and checked the bios and had another fiddle and it loads up, however it now cannot locate a HDD to install vista onto. Is this another bios problem? I have two HDDs, of which i think both work but neither are recognised. Any ideas on this one?

Well this is goooooooood! Now, I think maybe, You should take that 8800GT out, because myabe it isn't giving enoug power to the system.
