Hi guys, I've recently formatted my Hard dirve and realised that i've got no boot disks. Is there anyway that i can get a copy of XP to resart my computer?

Is a Compaq Presario (UK)

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks in Advance

You say you have no boot disks. Is it feasible to contact Compaq? If you explain your situation to them they may be able to help by sending you a replacement.

If not, then you will be looking at an new investment of an OEM disk (I've managed to get XP Home legit on ebay.co.uk for as little as £40).

I'm not sure I follow you. You can't install Windows XP Home from floppy disks. If you can't solve the issue with Compaq, you'll need to buy a hologrammed installation disk, which is one CD with the entire OS on it.

i think you need to press f10 to reload windows because there is a partition on the hdd that contains a recovery image or did you burn the image to several cds if you did then use them to recover windows

well, to cut a long story short...

I had a nasty trojan and my mate has performed a "military wipe" so i never got chance to back any data up.

he said it would be just like installing a new HD.

Is this correct!

Thanks again

I assume he probably used a program to use the DOD 5220.22-M standard. It is not exactly called a military wipe, it's the level of protection the US Department of Defence use to wipe their data, so needless to say it's secure enough for you not to recover anything from it. There may be some residual magnetism that the FBI would be able to discover, but not likely.

In future though, instead of getting your mate to do a military wipe of the HD, post a hijackthis log in the Security section of this forum. It would probably save you a lot of time and effort. :)
