Hiya,
i wud just like some advice on this topic.
My 'friend' LOL claims shutting down every nite is way better for ur computer and also a lot cheaper..
I told him that wasnt true ..
what i do is, go online for 100-150 hrs, then reboot and every month i shut down for a nite, then do the same over n over again, and i never had a prob....
any advice/suggestion ?
thnx

Some say it's beter to turn it off at night so heat doesn't build up and slowly damage the computer. Others say that having to boot up each time slowly wears away at the componts with that cold start every day. I'm not sure if these are true or not. just what i have heard.

idioticy

Amused by the fact that some people actually do have to think about this question.

Ur paybill, the longer u have ur computer on the more expensive it is, Ur PC uses the same amount of energy as a washing machine so people even put it on at night because it costs so much.

Next: The heat problem, even though ur computer isnt overheated an has an avarage temperature 30-45° the hours it get used count for the quality of ur materials.
If i do have to stand 5hours in the sun or 100 hours i will what i would take, same goes here, after the 5hours ur PC can cool off and get some fresh air into it.

Sumup:

Costs: Normal: 5hours x 1€(example electric bill) = 5€/time
Costs: Your case: 100x 1€(example electric bill) = 100€/time

Heat: Normal 5 hours @ 30°and cooloff, = super
Heat: Your case: 24/7 @ 30° and no cooloff only reboot = WORST THING U CAN DO
Your pc will break at 5x speed then an other PC so the life of your pc /5
I dont want to interfere in your battle, but it seems to me that you know Jack about pc's

Dearly,

Well just as long as your in a very well cooled room, it doesn't matter. Computer companies never turn their PCs off. The Computer lab at my school has been around for years and they only turn them off during holidays. These Computer companies and labs have very good AC units though. ]
The only real problem would be cost, I've read that leaving a PC on would increase your electric bill by around $30 a year....a YEAR...that isn't very much. This doesn't account for high0-end PCs though which will drain more power. The more you put into your PC the more power it takes. A PSU will only use as much power is needed, if you have a 600 watt PSU and your PC needs 430 watts to run, then the PSU will use 430 watts. Just keep the PC cool and it will run for years.
Another problem with leaving your PC running always, is having programs that have memory leaks. The memory leaks build up over time and slows down your PC. Since your RAM is cleared on every shut-down, it keeps performance optimal. I really doubt a cold-start will do much to damage a PC. A cold-start can damage car engines because there are moving parts that have to start up, a PC has very little moving parts. Just don't repeatedly turn it off and on. Wait about 5 seconds before booting your PC back up after shutdown so the electricity can discharge from your components before another wave of electricity hits them.

The answer to this question is Yes and No.
The logic behind keeping the computer always "on" is to maintain a constant temperature on the soldered joints to prevent microscopic "thermal" fractures (due to the expansion and contraction) which can progress each time a computer is shut down, cooled and restarted, this is evident on poorly soldered joints.
Not shutting down a computer in an uncontrolled environment (without A/C that can help filter out dust) can bring problems as dust accumulates in time on the CPU fans and PSU fans. This could lead to poor heat dissipation and shorten the life of the components.

In a controlled environment it is better not to shut down the PC, but in an uncontrolled environment it is better to shut down the PC.
