Hi looking for a PCI-E video card. Card will be used for moderate gaming-

Could anyone tell me which would be the best option of these. NOTE: SLI/Crossfire is not required. Budget is approximately $250 AUS.

In order of price:

6600gt
x800 pro
x800gt
x800GTO

Also could anyone help out with a quality brand

EDIT: Is the shader 3 feature of the 6600gt that much of an advantage?
Thanks

Video Card 101 that should help you figure out wat you want.
i recommend a 6800gs b/c its better than all of em and its only 209

Not in Australia. The 6800gs' start at $400.

Thanks Geoff, I just saw some performance graphs that showed the x800gt ahead of the 6600gt. Any opinions

oops my bad. i overlooked the AUS part.

in video card 101, suggestions for midrange bracket
about the 6600gt
This card has been the definition for 'midrange graphics' for a several months now and offers solid performance. I do find it difficult to reccomend this card however, after considering the RadeonX800 (above) which is a superior platform for a smaller pricetag.
so id go with the x800
about the x800
This is the cheapest 12pipe card; with the rebate it might also be the best value card from this bracket. Even without the rebate this card offers quite a bit of value. With the rebate this card is hands down, the best card value-wise probably for the entire price bracket.

Thanks Suave Very Helpful.

Now, can anyone suggest a good brand for the x800 gt?

Also, is there a major increase in performance from the x800/pro to the x800gt

If you can unlock/overclock, your best bet is the X800GTO2 or i forget which brand of GTO which you can unlock pipes and overclock it to X850 XT PE levels, which is ATI's best card....except their new X1x00 series.

I want to get a <whatever>, which manufacturer should I choose?
Well generally speaking there are a few ways at looking at this:

* Since you're asking then odds are you wont notice the difference in any of the manufacturers ... so get the cheapest one!
* Certain manufacturers tend to overclock their parts and so compared to the stock models, you will get a bit more performance out of them; the flipside is that you'll be paying a price premium. Some examples of such companies are ASUS, BFG, HIS, Sapphire and XFX. Not only will there be a difference in the performance, often there will be a thermal/acoustic difference as special aftermarket coolers are often used (see HIS/Sapphire for clear-as-day examples)
* Certain manufacturers tend to have lower-than-average prices: some examples of such are eVGA, MSI, Powercolor and Sapphire. Sometimes there's a catch but sometimes (probably more often than not) you're just getting a better deal without any strings attatched
* Some makers are generally known for doing really wild stuff with their cards: ASUS, eVGA, Gigabyte, HIS/Sapphire/Powercolor etc are some examples

But yeah, for the most part, it wont really matter all that much between makers.
about the x800gt
A very aggressive competitor to the 6600GT, this card offers significantly more bandwidth thanks to the larger memory addressing bus size. Again, the X800 (above) offers a marked increase in value and should definitively be considered before this card.
so you probably wont kno the difference

i don't recommend getting ATI card, all ATI cards sucks, get any nVidia card and it will be better than ATI, because most todays games are customized for nVidia like doom3, quake4, cod2 ,FEAR ..............

the x800gt is obviously better then the 6600gt, but the x800gt is more expensive. (At least in the U.S.)

Fanboyism? You won't notice much of a difference especially after different patches of the games and driver updates.

well, on some games you definately notice a difference between a nvidia and a ati card of the same level. but, lets not forget about te strong point of Ati's cards :)

That leads me to another question are there many games at the moment using the Doom 3 engine, or that are specificallly desgined for the Nvidias

yea most games are Desgined for nVidia, and all opengl games perform in nVidia much better than ATI, if u look now the 256MB 7800GTX is less powerful than X1800xt, but it will outperform the X1800 xt in opengl games like DOOM3, QUAKE4 and Call of duty 2, so opengl and customization gives an advantage for nvidia over ATI.

i forget to tell you that nVidia is dominating the gaming market right now getting their logo put on all major titles. Plus, Nvidia cards have good driver support so you wont have to wait a month or two after a game's release to be able to play it well, because ATI has to get drivers written to support the game.

And also that what information you think you have is obsolete.

Doesnt matter anymore. What you have in mind is obsolete. See the Video Card 101 for why I'm telling you its obsolete (section 8)

And again with the obsolete information
