Recording option greyed out

Using a rather aged web cam & separate mic I registered with Skype but am unable to get the computer to record sound. The "Recording" option in Properties is greyed out, how do I rectify this please? Regards Mat G

What other options are available in the Mixer dropdown box? My first thought is that I'd be trying to record from front speakers.
