fraps is for capturing video games footage, not desktop footage, man.
You could try Quick Screen Capture. I had it before and..it does the job, but camtasia is better.
Search on cnet downloads, or softpedia or google with "screen capture" as keyword(s)
Am I thinking right? You're trying to screen capture video from an old operating system/video game on an older computer?
You could try installing the operating system/video game on a virtual machine on a powerful PC (with VMWare or Microsoft Virtual PC) and screen capture the window with camtasia studio. I did so, and it was a pretty good capture.
