Recover after format

Hi all,

I have an external hard disk which i had to format to bring back to life.

Is there a way I can recover my files back after the format?

I heard there are programs for it. Can anyone suggest me a free program to do this?

A complete format, means a complete wipe of the hard drive. And from my experience, It's impossible to get those files back

The best option you would have had, was to back up some of your important data.
