Recovering data from a broken hd.

Hi All,
I have I 2.5inch HD in a caddy as a backup. It has worked fine until now.

When I connect it to my lap top,

A, It not listed in “my computer”.
B, There is a regular, clicking or ticking noise from the HD.

As far as I know there are two moving parts to the HD, the spinning disk and the reader.
I don’t care about the HD but if one or both of the moving parts are broken, what are the odds of getting the data off?

There's much more to a hard drive than the moving parts simply breaking. And when you say regular, do you mean consistent or normal.

Either way, assuming nothing is physically damaged inside (heads dragging along the platters) the disk would probably be recoverable given enough money. At this point, it sounds like there's not much more you could do, but recovery companies have equipment to recover data from failed drives.

Yeah, I know there is more to HD’s. The noise is not usual, sounds to me like the reader (assuming it works in a similar way to a CD player)is loose.:(

Hmm...well if it were loose, it's probably give you a grinding sound before anything seeing as the gap between the heads and platters are next to nothing. As for how it functions, it's somewhat similar to an optical drive, but rather different as well. There are plenty of photos of hard drives online so I won't bother posting one here :P

You could try a external enclosure. I just had the same thing happen to me. Someone suggested trying a external enclosure and it worked. It recognized everything on the disk.

I don't know how it does that but it works.

It is a box that you put the hard drive in and connect to your computer through a usb port.

This is what I used and worked with no problems.

They also make a cable that does the same thing. It is called a usb to sata/ide adapter cable.

Here is an example:
