recovering deleted/formatted photos from camera memory stick

HI.
I accidently lost all photos from a holiday 4 yrs ago by somehow losing the photos--I think I accidently wiped them from my camera's memory card. Now I've decided to try to get them back. Know I would have had much more chance of success at the time.
Since that hol I have filled then deleted new photos from the memory card several times--will data recovery software have any chance of working and if so does anyone recommend any particular software that works better. I assume the free ones are poor.
The camera is a canon digital ixus v3 3.2 megapixels and the memory card is an 128MB compactflash card--the old bigger square shaped ones that you can write on the back of.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

The first rule to file recovery is to stop using the drive as soon as possible. It appears you've been using the memory card for 4 years, I doubt you will recover anything from 4 years ago.

Remember that writing files on it might overwrite the files you were trying to recover rendering them corrupted or useless.

Now, to actually recover those files you have to use forensic/data recovery software such as Photorec.

Testdisk & Photorec

Wish you luck.

Kiss your pictures goodbye. You will have little to no luck getting anything off the card now.

Recover deleted photos

The main problem you'll have is the saving of new photos to the memory card since you deleted the files that you now want back.

When you delete pictures (or any files) from a PC or memory card (or USB drive) the data itself isn’t normally deleted, just the file system pointers that says where the data for those files is located. The area where the deleted picture data was stored is also now marked as free space so it is available to the system for any new files to be written there instead.

If and when that happens, then it is too late to recover your deleted pictures so it is very, very important that new pictures or files aren’t saved to the memory card in the meantime as each new save increases the chance of overwriting the deleted images that you want back.

One of the easiest ways to see if your deleted pictures can be recovered is to try some photo recovery software.

One tip is to try a free trial version of a commercial product that will scan the memory card for deleted pictures and show you exactly what pictures can be recovered. At least that will show you if you can recover the deleted pictures or if it’s too late already.

You can find more useful information on how to recover deleted photos here.

You will have no luck in recovering those pictures. As other members have said, it's now overwritten by new files you saved on those flash drives or memory cards.

The best thing to do is grab some hard copy, printed photos, if there are some, and scan it. This way, you can make it into digital format again.

thanks everyone for the replies.i'll try ur suggestion Arfamo--the free trial of professional recovery software but i see from what u all say my chances are near nil.
