Recovering deleted Skype conversations

Hi all,

Does anybody know where and how I can recover the Skype cache on my PC when conversations have been deleted from Skype? I heard conversations stay saved in a 'cache' file. I am just wondering how to access it. I'm on Windows 7.

Well everything is stored under the %appdata%\Skype folder, so you can try searching there. Just looked around myself but wasn't able to read anything.

Do you have any idea how to retrieve what's in those empty boxes? And how do you read the .dat files?

I believe the dat files are encrypted, but you can try this utility. Make sure Skype isn't running when you run the utility. http://nirsoft.net/utils/skype_log_view.html

In conjusction to that utility you might need to run a file deletion utility to recover the deleted files. There is the excellent Ontrack EasyRecovery Enterprise or the free Ease Us Data Recovery Wizard or Recuva.

Hi, thanks. I tried running that programme and it only really shows stuff that I haven't deleted. I am trying to find all of the conversations from before the point that I cleared chat history on the Skype programme its self, if that makes sense?

Since those files are most likely deleted you would have to run the recovery software I mentioned and look for the dat files. Huge PITA!
