this morning i bought a professional version of xp because the version i had running i couldn't find the activation key. well i had built the computer about 3 weeks ago, and i had installed a fairly large amount of files and drivers. well i go to install this morning, and it goes through and now i cant really get anything back. i found the shortcuts from the hard drive, but its still not letting me load them up. plus my local disk is saying 120gb, when my hard drive is 320gb  . am i going to have to install everything again? im confused, because i had microsoft word installed, and im not sure if i can use the product key again. any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Was your previous OS on their XP too or previous OS's? During the install, did you do an upgrade or fresh clean new install? If you don't have a partitioned drive, it sounds like you did an upgrade/reinstalled over it without removing the old stuff.

Yeah, the old stuff is still there. You will have to reinstall it all though, because you will need to have the registry entries updated and everything. Lots of fun. Just wipe the drive out and start over again.

by installed files, you mean loaded applicaitons?

Some applications are self contained, but the majority for windows require registry access, like posted by sirkenin, so more than likely you will need to wipe and reload.

Is there actual data files on there you wish to retrieve?
