Hi guys,
looking for some help if possible, recently my external hdd gave up the ghost, however i was able to retrive the files from it(photos) using a program called recover my files that i downloaded online, everything seemed fine as my pictures showed up fine in thumbnail, however when opening some of them(about 50%)in microsoft office picture manager they appear discoloured and chopped,so am just wonder why this has happened and is there any way of fixing them?many thanks

There is a phenomenon called "file fragmentation", when the file is stored on the disk in several nonadjacent fragments.
On the FAT filesystem, when the file is deleted, only the information about its first fragment remains. The second and subsequent fragments cannot be recovered.
Most probably your files were fragmented, so it is possible that you cannot recover images entirely.
Thumbnail is small and is stored close to beginning the file, so it is typically recovered OK, while the full-size image is damaged.

If it is a Western Digital brand drive, you may want to go to their website and download their free drive recovery software.

Another I've used is FileRecovery Pro by LC Technology International, Inc.
It was the best $99 I spent when I needed to recover an entire drive that failed.
