Recovery USB Drive didn't recover to WIN 10

I upgraded from Win 8.1 to Win10
Then I created a recovery drive
Then I tried to recover/re-install Win 10, but it recovered to 8.1 and gave me the option of upgrading to Win 10 during the re-install process. Is this the standard way of recovering to Win 10? If I ever have to recover after July 29th, will it only recover to 8.1 and I will have to pay for Win 10? Everything I read said I could create a recovery drive after the Win 10 upgrade and would be able to recover to Win 10, but when I did it, it only recovered to 8.1.

Any insight?

Hello,

What did you use to create the recovery drive? Sounds like you might have accidentally used 8.1 installation media.

If you've already upgraded to 10 then your key should continue to work for 10.

I'd re-download the Media Creation Tool and then fresh install from that media.
