I am in the same boat. I have been trying for awhile now. I am going to back up my files and strip the computer back to factory settings. I asked this question on Yahoo Answers, but I can't get to any of the recommended sites. One girl did post to call Microsoft and they will fix it for you for free. I will copy her post here [try smitfraudfix.exe
http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.p...
the site looks terrible, but it is what microsoft used to remove a hideous trojan virus from my computer, the page also has instructions.
or, for FREE, call microsoft: 1-866-PCSafety or 1-866-727-2338
http://support.microsoft.com/default.asp...
and they will go into your computer with you on the phone and do the work for you. they may change your homepage to some microsoft site, lol, but, other than that, they will more than likely fix your malware issue, and give you a case number in case anything is still wrong.
malware bytes didn't work for the virus i had, it didn't even detect it, although many people find it useful...
i say call microsoft for FREE and sit back and watch and learn.]

I will try tomorrow. Respond to this post if you find out what works.
Good luck!

can't run in safe mode. all the exe's come up on the black screen [sorry- not to savvy to know the lingo] and the computer gets stuck there. Windows won't actually start at all. Any way around this?

I just tried it Buzz- Nope- it opens a blank tab on my browser- tried to copy/paste the link location also. It won't go anywhere.

I can't get onto any of those sites to download- running in mozilla now. Let me try Explorer- nope, nothing

So, I got hijack this off of download.com. I was able to download it, but I can't run it when I click on the exe. Any help?

I tried that- nothing. It is the setup exe. I can't even get to the set up. I click it and get the hourglass like it is running, then nothing.
this thing is soooo horrible! At least you are a step a head of me. Sorry to cut in on your post by the way.

EDIT: Just noticed your last post. Try downloading a zipped version from http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/HijackThis-Download-5034.html. Unzip HijackThis.exe, rename it to scanner.exe and run it. There should be no need to install with that version.[/QUOTE]

Here is the log when HijackThis was run. I did rename it also- had to move it to a permanant folder

Sorry to leave you hanging, had to sleep. I will get to a clean computer today and get that onto a disk. I'll let you know what happens

Okay- so by some magical event I was able to run Malware bytes. It deleted some malware and so now I can get to those sites. I downloaded combofix but when I try to run it I get an error from compo fix. It says it has encountered a problem and needs to close.

So for now I am using spyware terminator and malware bytes. Is there anything else I should be using to protect my computer?

Glad to hear it. Please post the log from Malwarebytes', you'll find it under the logs tab within the program.

There are a number of entries for Norton showing in your log, but it appears that the program is not fully installed. Can you please confirm the status of Norton on your computer? If you have removed it, I strongly suggest you download the Norton Removal Tool and run it to remove the Norton remnants. In this case, it is imperative that you install another Antivirus as soon as possible, and allow it to run a full scan on your computer. AVG makes an excellent free antivirus client, as do AntiVir or avast!.

Please download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from >>here<< and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to launch program.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Your firewall may alert you that RSIT is requesting Internet access. Please allow it.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open: log.txt<-- this will be maximized and info.txt<-- this will be minimized.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here or here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Unzip SecurityCheck.zip and a folder named Security Check should appear.
  • Open the Security Check folder and double-click Security Check.bat
  • Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
Note: if a security program requests permission from dig.exe to access the Internet, allow it to do so.

Please post the logs from Malwarebytes', RSIT and Security Check. I will give you some more prevention advice, but first I'd like to be sure there's no other malware remaining.
