Reformat Help Please

Hi, i need to reformat my computer, But the last time i did it.. It took the whole operating system off... I think this is to a past installation of another operating system and then reformatting to remove it. However the last time i reformatted it did take the whole operating system of and i was left with a blinking dash.

I used a disc to reinstall XP but the version seemed to have problems so i used the format disc again and thought then i'd reinstall xp, But after the format had complete the XP i thought i lost started and i was left with the normal blue screen to create account etc... Just like i reformatted right after buying the pc.. This is the stage i'm out now except i need to format.

I don't want to have to use the XP disc, Install Xp, format, to get the Xp i want working. I do not understand it, while using the xp disc i have deleted the one and only partition and created a new one, But yet the xp still comes back, Don't get me wrong this is what i want because all my drivers install with it too and using the disc and letting that installation stay without formatting there are no drivers or anything or any of the software that came with the computer.

Bacically what i'd like to do is format and actually keep XP on here this time so its installed to factory default without having to use that disc all over because right now i feel that i will keep having problems with the computer after doing all that.

There is no way to format and still have anything left on the drive. The whole purpose of formatting is to remove everything

Thank you for your reply, but surely when i formatted before it didn't take the factory installed operating system off and while i have it working isn't there a way to make sure that it does not remove it each time.. And save me doing that all the time when needed?

If anything was left after a reinstall of windows, you probably simply reloaded windows. It is possible to install over your current copy of windows of even have two copies on your hard drive.

Oh, i understand.. so i could simple be reloading windows... But then how come all teh other stuff comes back then after reformatting? Its complicated.. What i'd like and what i can't seem to accept is that i can't format again and keep the operating system the way it used to go back to factory default without me now having to mess around with the disc and format disc.
