Reformatting a Laptop

I recently purchased a NW8240 laptop from a friend and wanted to reformat it to get rid of all of the junk he had on it for a nice fresh start. He had everything except for the Windows XP disc. I have the key, just not the disc. My brother said I might be able to do it all with the recovery disc that I got but I don't think I could. Is there any special way to reformat a laptop or am I just going to have to find somebody with the XP pro disc?

what do you mean by "the recovery disc"? some manufactures label the OS disc as a "Recovery Disc" anyways, so it might work.

there is no "Special way" to reformat laptops.... as far as i know.
they are just "compact" computers...

There's nothing different between a laptop and desktop when installing windows. As for windows, assuming you mean basic "junk" and not like pre-loaded crap, one of the recovery disks might have everything the laptop original came loaded with. Sometimes you get an actual Windows disk, other times you get a few disks that you load in order that puts all the original applications back on the machine.
