Reformatting Hard-Drives

Hi guys

Wondering if you can help me here, im upgrading my computer and replacing all parts, i wish to take the old hard drive and put it into another machine..how do i reformat this hard drive so that it will be completely cleared to be able to use the whole 80GB hard drive?

if you set it up as a slave, you can right click the drive, in my computer, and click format, thats the only way i know.

Actually there is one more solution, i'd say more safe...
well, u could back up ur entire HD(saves all ur data),
and after formatting restore that image.
only problem is u'll need proper back up software
(they are not free),

yes u have to,
but as far as i understand u do not care about data on ur old HD.
so, u don't have to do that.
u can just use Disk Director, this software allows to merge/split partitions(u'll definitelly need that later),
and what is more usefull 4 u has disk format tools.

No you dont need to back the drive up....

You can do it that way or through disk manager in the admin tools of control panels.

Disk format tools are free all over the internet... Foirentina is talking nonsense...

You saying "yes u have to," (backup his hd)..

When he says prior "so that it will be completely cleared "

Then you recomend a program which costs money, to do what windows and MANY other FREE programs already do.

What you are saying.

I find that the easiest way is to format it from DOS. type "format C:" (no quotes) and there you go. But you can't be in windows when you do that, you need a DOS boot disk. (to make one, put an empty floppy in your drive, and click format in my computer, then select the option to make an MS-DOS boot disk.)

well Trizon, why don't read post up to end.
it's sad : "yes u have to,
but as far as i understand u do not care about data on ur old HD.

.

If it's going to be a 2nd drive do as JP said. If it is going to be the main drive you can format when installing the new os.

This isn't a big deal. We need to know weather this drive is already a second drive in one computer or if you dont care about the OS on the drive.

If this is the case, boot into windows, and then open run and type "cmd" into it, and then type FORMAT C: and it will give you a comfirmation, type YES or Y or whatever is the command for yes, and PRESTO. Newly formatted HDD.

cheers everyone, right this computer right now i have the parts to upgrade, but thr other family computer has a 40gb hard drive, so we want to move my 80GB HD to this family computer, and my computer will get a spanking new 400GB HD

So i want this 80GB HD completely wiped clear, so we get the full use of the 80GB HD again

yea, set the harddrive jumper as slave, put it in, turn on the computer, go to my computer, right click on the harddrive and click format and follow the yellow brick road

Sorry, how do u mean set hard drive jumper as slave?

He means take the HDD out of your PC, Put it in it's new home, but before you do that, move the little plastic thingy (in back of HDD) to SL instead of MA or CS. Then boot your HDD new home computer, right click the drive, and click format, format drive.

I would strongly reccomend leaving the 40gig drive in the family comp. as well as putting the 80 in. install all programs to 80gig.
