Refurbing an old Dell

Hello all,

This is my first post, so here it goes. I have an old Dell Precision 530 Workstation. In its prime (in 2001) it was a $4000 machine. It was purchased with dual Intel Xeon 1.4GHz SL4WX processors (1.4 GHz, 400 MHz FSB, socket 603, the "Foster" series so its 180nm), and 1 Gb of RDRAM (Which I dont plan on upgrading because 8 years later it's STILL expensive). Not very impressive compared to todays standards, but since it runs on server processors, they do pack a certain punch. I really wanted to get a pair of Intel Xeon SL79V processors that are 3.0 GHz MP (still socket 603 and 400 MHz FSB, in the "Gallatin" Series not the "Foster"), and I was wondering if it would be possible to swap these out (as far as I can tell it should work). The motherboard is a Dell 3N384. I realize that buying a new computer would give me a faster system, but for $30 bucks, I think its worth it. So once again, my question is can I use the SL79V in place of the SL4WX?

Thanks in advance

Supports both Foster [256k Cache] and Prestonia [ 512k cache] CPU's

Don't know if it will support the Gallatin core. Specs on CPU support on that thing are pretty hard to find.

To be honest, I don't know for sure. The specs on the CPUs look the same except for the voltage and multiplier is unlisted. If the BIOS supports the lower voltage on the SL6WB I don't see why it shouldn't work since it says it should support the Prestonia core.

Since I can't find enough in depth specifications on it, I really hesitate to recommend with any certainty that it will work.

This may be one of those deals where you are going to have to try and contact (ACK) Dell technical support and confirm this for sure.

Until you know for sure I would not buy the processor you plan to upgrade to. You could end up buying an obsolete processor that doesn't work with your present system.
