Registry fixing on external hard drive help?

Hello,
I have a computer that won't boot up. I've removed the hard drive and connected to a new machine via a usb connection. I can see all the files and access them without any problem. I'd like to fix the registry as I believe this has become corrupted. Does anybody know which software would allow you to scan and fix the registry on a hard drive connected in this way?

Many Thanks

Jon

what OS is on the computer that wont boot? assuming windows the easiest way would be to just run a repair installation.

But I guess I should ask what error you are getting when you try to boot up the machine?

The machine i'm trying to boot is xp home. It says press r to repair the machine and asks for the installation disk which i no longer have. I've connected the hard drive to a machine running windows 7 and as i put before i can read all the files so the hard drive is def working. I had the same error a few weeks back and took it to a shop that charged me £50 to repair. I'm loathed to do this again so was hoping to have a go myself. I'm guessing the must have run some sort of software on the disk to fix the booting problem.

thats it just says press r to repair the machine? hmmm any of my solutions would require you to have the windows cd... maybe someone else here can throw you a bone. or you can find a windows xp home cd.
