Reinitialize my drive or not?

I have a 3.5 SATA type (?) external hard drive in which my computer doesn't recognize. A computer guy looked at it and said I need to initialize my drive in order for me to run some data recovery software. I'm trying to recover some data on the drive. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Mark

What OS are you running ? It makes a difference. XP requires different bios settings to run SATA drives than Vista or WIN 7.

K, under Vista and Win 7 you set :
SATA AHCI MODE to "Enabled" for XP it should be "Disabled".
SATA PORT 1 NATIVE MODE to Disabled" for XP it should be "Enabled"
HPET to "Enabled" for XP it should be "Disabled"
LIMIT CPUID MAX TO 3 should be set to "Disabled" for all 3 aforementioned OSs. This setting is set to "Enabled" for NT4

Thanks for the info, but three different computers couldn't recognize the drive, so I don't understand why changing the bios settings would help. I'm using a USB connection.
