Reinstall DirectX

something is wrong with my friends DirectX...

He runs a game and it says he needs DirectX blah blah version or higher
so he went to get the latest directX and tried installing it but it said he had DirectX blah blah blah or later installed...
what does he do?

What version of Windows is it? Sounds to me like maybe he doesn't have a particular directx blah blah capable card. Perhaps the error message was stating his card doesn't meet the minimum DirectX requirments.

no it cant' be that (it is a 6600GT)

see we are trying to play Battle For Middle Earth 2 like we did before his computer went to emachines to get some fixing, when it got back it froze up on some DirectX tests
and it seemds DirectX needs to be reinstalled...

Hmm, this seems quite odd. Are there any device conflicts in device manager or anything?

Ok he reinstalled DirectX, the game still crashes... i will ask him to check the device manager...

Edit: i don't beleive there are hardware conflicts from what i told him to look at...

In CounterSrike: Source it tells him he needs to have the latest version of DirectX Installed
In battlfore middle earth II it just crashes

he can't, it is a family PC...
or else that would have been my immediate reaction
Try opening dxdiag (Start>Run>DxDiag I'm sure you know), and see what it reports. Also try running some of the tests included in Dxdiag.

we did, and he passed, but the games still crash, and CS says he needs directX 9 or higher (which we have)

im going to bed now...
leave some things i could try for tomorrow...

I'm having the exact same issue on my cheap ass Compaq, I'm not sure if it my card or not seeing as it is the thing that came with comupter, but I'm trying to play N64 Emulator and it wont let me. I ran all checks and everything is enabled and working all tests passed, but I still cant play it. I emailed Microsoft support about it and they were terrible. They told me that from what they can see I may have an issue with my motherboard, but that sounds like crap to me. So I have no clue what the deal is, but I highly doubt it is the motherboard. The updates I installed didnt work either. So I'm highly interested in this as well

Don't you get it. It's never Microsoft's fault. It's always your hardware. :P
