Reinstalling after a new CPU install

So, I've heard around the forum two different opinions, and that is to reinstall after a new CPU install and another saying you will not need to. Question isn't urgent, just going from an X2 555 to Bulldozer, so it won't be for a while. Opinions? If I need to reinstall, I'd just install windows on my old 120GB until bulldozer releases then reinstall everything on my SSD.

No need to reinstall with just a CPU upgrade. Who told you that? You will need to update the boards bios for Zambezi.

I believe Bigfella said "You should really reinstall after a CPU upgrade."

But ok. And I just ordered the AM3+ UD3, so would I still need to update it?

You can change hardware out, but if you change out the motherboard you will need to reinstall and re activate your windows install. Sometimes a fresh installation can be better, to bring everything up to speed and avoid potential issues.

No you dont need to reinstall. You wont need to update the bios till before you install the Zambezi.

To add to what I said above.

If your going to use the same harddrive with a new board. Like said above you will need to reinstall. What I said only applies to a CPU upgrade.

If you ordered the board now and just keeping it till Zambezi comes out. It doesnt have the Zambezi bios update.

Three things can happen.
1. It boots fine, but just calls it some off the wall processor.
2. Boots, but is unstable.
3. Will not boot at all.

If the first one happens, your fine. You will just need to update the bios. If the second and third happens your screwed. You will need to get a processor thats already supported to get it to boot. Like a cheap AM3/+ Sempron or maybe a friend that has one you can borrow.

All right, here's what I'm gonna do.

I am building a whole new computer. The one in the sig doesn't apply, except the SSD which I'll wipe and install a new copy of windows.

I ordered the Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3 AM3+ board. I just got a used X2 555 that I will use until zambezi is released. I will install everything to my SSD, and use my new storage drive as well. When I get the Zambezi, I will download the update, apply it, and restart. If everything is fine, I'll turn it off and replace it with the Zambezi.

So I should be fine since I can apply the update with my 555, then install the Zambezi.

When did I say that? I may have said you need to re-activate windows after a CPU upgrade or that you will need to reinstall windows after a mobo upgrade, but it was you who said that:

Whoops. You got me.

It's always a good idea to do a reinstall of windows after any new components. I would even do it with a new CPU, but I have OCD so that not may apply to you...
