Reinstalling Operating System

When you go to reinstall the operating system on a computer can you use backup disks from a different computer...I wanted to use my compaq cds and install them on a notebook (not a compaq)...would this work

no i dont think it will the backup cd will be attached to the other pcs motherboard and will not install, even if it does the drivers for your laptop motherboard would be wrong and you will have more problems than its worth.
