alright, i am planning on getting a new mobo and processor sometime next week. i have heard that if you get a new motherboard you will have to reinstall windows. is this true? and how can i reinstall without having to reformat?

also will i have to get a new windows cd key from microsoft? i have installed xp twice on this one already, and i didnt seem to need one then.

thanx,
shupola:)

You might have to. Before you swap out the motherboard delete our mobo drivers and back everything up.

You shouldnt need a different ms serial key, although your using a new motherboard its still gonna be the same system, I dont really think it would be illegal to reinstall it.

You're right, as long as all of your registry keys remain intack, there is no reason to reinstall windows. You should however, flash upgrade the BIOS, once you install the new mobo, and check all your hardware to make sure windows is recognizing it.

If it was legal before, than you're fine

im wondering why i would need to do this? shouldnt the bios already be up to date on a brand new mobo?

woohaa, this really works? I mean I don't have to reinstall anything to run my windows again on a new motherboard?:D

Yup... a couple of the guys there have tested it out with stellar results.

Though changing motherboards with a Linux is even easier... turn it on and it works (exception-- custom-compiled kernels might ruin your day).

I've never tried it, but you can reinstall windows without reformatting. Just boot up from the XP CD and select repair reinstall.

i tried that when i reinstalled windows about 2 weeks ago. when i pressed enter, it took me to the repair console, which looked a lot like dos(might have been actually). i had no idea what to do, even with the help menu.

Someitmes window's thinks its on another PC because of the ahrdware change, a=ops you just hjave to reactive it, which might take a phone call.

You hit 'r' at the wrong time - you have to proceed to the next menu, after accepting the licence agreement. Then select repair. Quick walkthrough: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
