Reinstalling xp

Hi could someone please tell me how to reinstall windows. I've tried restoring my system to sort out a problem but it is not working.
Can you also tell me how I can keep everything I have on my laptop now, and also is it safe to do.
Cheers.

It depends on whether or not you have a full-fledged Windows disc or just a "restore" disc from your PC manufacturer. If you have a regular Windows CD, you boot up with it and pick a Repair option. If you have only a restore disc, you had better have your data already backed up, because a restore will return everything to as it was when you first bought it. And that means you will need to reinstall all your applications, adjust your settings, etc.

Cheers Tom, I have backed everything up. Can I now just reinstall. I was confused as to where this backup goes when I reinstalled, does that get wiped aswell or does it stay where I have put it.
Thanks.

put it on a different harddrive then where u are gona install windows...
then when it is backed up on a different harddrive (like an external harddrive, something that isn't on the disk that is gona have windows re-installed on...

then take ur windows disk, and boot from it, then it will give u some options... tell it to full erase your partition that windows was on, then make a new partition (all this can be seen here)

then just follow the link i gave you

Can you please go into a bit more depth, I only know the basics of pc's. Also it is a laptop and I do not have any other hard drive.
Cheers.

k, u cant do a complete reinstall and keep all ur stuff unless you get something to back your stuff up with... i would recomend a cheap external harddrive that plugs in via USB that will fit all your stuff...

after that:

1. Turn off your computer.
2. Turn it on and quickly put in your Windows Disk.
3. When it is booting a message should come up that says: Press any key to but from CD. Press any key within 5 seconds from when the message comes up.

to tell you how to do this in detail click here

that will tell you how to install windows...

Thanks very much. I don't suppose you could give me a bit of info on the following.
I bought a ps2 hard drive about 10 days ago and cannot install the driver. When I put the disc in, autoplay runs then it says there is more than one device on it and asks me what I want to do. I can't get passed that. If I try to connect the hard drive the computer doesn't even recognise it has been plugged in.
Cheers.

Hi, it's not the ps2 that you need to know about, I just wanted to know what could cause the usb not to be recognised.
Cheers.

driver problems... which i am not great at... but i will tell u this... if you re-installed windows you wouldn't have that problem! btw what windows are you using?

Does the laptop have a CD burner? If so, put your backups on those. Whenever I have had to back up my XP box, it takes me about ten or so CD-RW's full of data. I only have a restore set (thanks for nothing, eMachines!) so I can't avail myself of "repair" options. I'm jealous. LOL
