When is it asking for a password? You should be able to format the drive through the XP CD wizard, or if that fails, through DOS

How are you going about reformatting? The easiest way would be to do it from the actual XP installation, and there would be no need for a password.

I'm putting the xp disc in and it loads up to the setup page, I then press r and it asks for something I can't remember and I type 1. It then asks for a password.
Cheers.

Don't press r. I have never seen the repair option work. Just do a complete reinstall.

Hit enter at the welcome screen. Windows will tehn search for a existing copy of XP on your machine, and then ask if you wish to repair it. Choose that option to repair versus the console mode. It might ask you for teh administrator password, you should know that.

Could you please talk me through it as i'm looking through the net and i'm getting different things coming up.
Cheers.

He made this thread because he doesn't know that password. ;)

Insert the CD and boot off of it. Pick whichever option has the complete format and reinstall, and just follow the directions.

Sorry bobo but Could you please give a decent link to the instructions to do it. I tried to reinstall it once and it said I shouldn't do it because it may cause problems. I really want to wipe the hard drive first.
Cheers.

Well tell it to fcuk itself :P If you can't format it from there, then make a DOS bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com,(choose DOS 6.22(not the 5.25 inch version)) insert that before you turn the computer on. When the prompt comes up, type "format c:" (no quotes), and it will format it. Then reboot and insert the XP CD and just do a regular install.
