I have been thinking about building a new computer for a couple months now after it seems like it is recommend on the forum here. I have never had any major trouble in the past with bought ones (except a drive failure which was replaced under warranty). I take it the parts that you buy to build your own are much more reliable. But I am wondering how often something goes wrong with built ones as opposed to bought ones, and if it is hard to troubleshoot what goes wrong since there is not warranty? Or even if the individual parts are warrantied, is it hard to find where the problem is ?

i am an experienced builder on my 4th build now and never have had any problems. Every time something goes wrong i just pop open the case a look for the issue. i recommend buying good sata cables though. i got cheap ones in my current system and it periodically stops working with the hdd. i gotta reseat the connection. all of my systems have been very reliable and trouble shooting is rare and relatively easy.

As far as the individual parts warranty:
Where you buy them from should have some kind of return policy even if it's just 30 days. If they don't-don't buy from there.
After that the part is covered by the manuf warranty.
Depending on the part-could be the 1yr-3yr-5yr range and ram will have limited lifetime which means if you don't fry it-it's covered for life.

As far as reliability is concerned, I always read reviews for possible RMA issues. After building my personal 3rd desktop, and in my spare time building dozens of friends, I have only had an issue with a northbridge fan burning up on nforce4 chipset motherboards.

When you build your one desktop YOU get to chose the components you want which makes it completely customizable. Most manufacturers get stripped down cheap motherboards ans PSU for In box desktop. You can get better components if you build it yourself.
The question now is whether or not you know how to build a desktop. If not, fear not there plenty of ressources on this forum.
