Remote Access to PC

My father can no longer keep his PC configured properly. We live hours away. I'm looking for some software that would permit me to login to his computer as administrator and keep things working (e.g. configure email, make backups, update virus, add/delete programs, etc.).

I've heard a little about Windows' Remote Desktop but have no experience with it. And, if there's quality freeware available I'd prefer that.

Can anyone recommend anything?

Thank you!

There's go to my pc, but they charge you for it. The remote desktop only works when there is someone at that computer (has to accept the invite or send an invite). What all problems is he having??

realvnc home edition works. i would buy also. Im using a enterprise edition and works well. the home edition is like $39.00. Allows remote access and acts as a ftp. used for about 6 or 7 yrs now.

TeamViewer is another good free option for remote access.

I like LogMeIn as well.
