remote & bluetooth connections

Hi all, I don't know if I am in the right category, seemed to fit.
I know a bit, but I am hardly an expert at anything. I have win7 on a dell xps if that is of any matter.

If I uncheck "allow remote computers from connecting to this pc" in the dialog box for that situation, and uncheck "allow bluetooth enabled devices from connecting to this computer" in the dialog box for that situation, does that prevent any device from acquiring direct access to this computer, or are there a zillion apps out there that can acquire access just by calling functions within the various related system files-most of which have total access?

I am almost certain access is happening, though I am not sure what to look for. One seemingly clear indication is brs files appearing in the event services viewer during times that I am not here, but maybe I am mistaken with this as those events include the triangle indicating there was a failed attempt at the service starting, perhaps because, again, i was not here.

There are so many remote desktop applications similar to gotomeeting that I wonder how do i protect myself from allowing this to possibly happen. This is a shared laptop, and there is perhaps some malicious intent which i would like to eliminate, that i do the bills on here notwithstanding.

Any help or directions to go in would be much appreciated.

Thanks and best,

Plus :)

Sounds like what you need is a good firewall. Try Comodo's firewall and adjust it's settings. There are numerous ways to get inside a computer.

yes, numerous ways. correction to the brs mention above. its the bt**** services that attempt to start up when no one (not me, anyway) is physically present. the bluetooth services associated with the hardware installed, but, necessary services to call, i would think, should a remote application be trying to get access.

I'm just thinking out loud here.

i ran thru the task mgr services running just now, and there were peer networking, windows image acquisition and a couple others i can't fathom why there, let alone running. needless to say i terminated those processes.

I suppose I need to sit down with my router admin interface and take my time with it if i really want a lock down environment that allows my paranoid self to feel secure, or otherwise just take my chances like the general population.
I think I will try experimental windows of time in which only those times, will those services be allowed to start.
