Remote Control Program??

Let me preface this by saying if someone knows of a way to accomplish this, or a program that can do it, you will forever be my hero... I might build a shrine to you....

Now that thats out of the way...

I use my pc at night for watching movies and network television streams on my television that is in front of my couch on the other side of my room (connected by a cleverly hidden RCA cable)

This setup works decent, but I have no way of controlling volume or skipping scenes, etc while on the couch which is really freaking annoying. However! I do have an ASUS mobo that came with the remote control that works for audio programs but I cant set it up to work with VLC which is what I usually use to watch movies.

So my question is do they make a program that would let me set the asus remote to perform commands within VLC? Or even better, can I use the remote control from my television ORR even better, is there a way to accomplish using my blackberry 8310 via bluetooth?

As in windows media player? yeah if you like using crappy software that needs a billion codecs downloaded, sure use it.

to the OP:

I think you may just need to get off your butt and walk a few feet to your computer. I have a similar set up and I just get up and walk over and do it that way. VLC is far superior and I just get up and walk my butt over 5 feet and set it up on the computer and then walk back.

If you run Linux you can look into myth TV, or just bet like a bluetooth mouse/keyboard and then your problem is solved.
 
I agree VLC blows crappy media player out of the water, but when I'm watching a movie at night, some films the music is super loud and the speaking parts are to soft. So I'm trying not to wake up the neighborhood when watching a movie. I do have a wireless keyboard but I guess I didn't think its signal would reach... I'm gonna try it tonight.

By the way, thanks for a real answer unlike xrt! :D
 
if you got volume controls on your wireless keyboard you should be set. VLC has a list of keyboard commands as well. If you take the time to learn it you can be real lazy and just use your keyboard!
 
If you have a Sony Erickson phone and a blue tooth dongle you can use the phone to control the mouse.
 
I'm not sure about the compatibility with your setup, but I use iMON Manager which is pretty customizable. Here's a description of it.
